Why most SEO audits fail

Most SEO audits fail for an unintuitive reason: they’re too thorough.

A crawler will happily hand you 4,000 issues. Ship that list to a development team and watch what happens — nothing, for six months, because nobody can tell which of the 4,000 things actually matters.

Severity is not the same as impact

A missing alt attribute is a real issue. It is not the reason you’re not ranking. But audits tend to present both in the same table, sorted by a severity score the tool invented.

What to do instead

Pick the five things suppressing the most value. Explain why each one matters in terms of traffic or revenue. Put everything else in an appendix and tell people it’s an appendix.

An audit nobody acts on isn’t an audit. It’s a document.
